The Blockwork Cabin is a one bedroom dwelling designed with a 70 sqm internal floor area to take advantage of Brisbane City Council’s ‘granny flat’ allowances. In order to accommodate proximity issues, the interior is mostly introverted while drawing light from sky-windows integrated into the rooftop garden. Visual connections across the central void create a rich spatial enclosure that compensates for the compact area. The project utilises a blockwork and concrete shell with insertions of tongue and groove timber cabinetry and built in furniture. Breezeblocks with sliding glass panels externally, offer a secure form of ventilation.
