Cloud Dwellers were engaged by the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre to explore ways that increased natural light could be brought to the deep foyer space of their original Merivale St building. This would both enliven the space and reduce the reliance on artificial lighting. Our design utilises angular selective skylights teamed with acrylic diffusers to broadly distribute light throughout the day, and in particular to provide evocative illumination of the ceiling. The diffusers are also act as sculptural interventions scattered across the ceiling. From a distance, their simple geometries respond to the language of the original building. However they incorporate rich detail at the small scale, perforated in a pattern derived from the paper doilies that evoke the traditions of hospitality associated with a special event.
