A hilltop site in Brisbane’s northern suburbs offered views to Moreton Bay to the northeast, plus glimpses of the D’Aguilar Range to the west, the city to the south. Our split level plan allows the house to reach the height to capture the views, while still maintaining a direct connection to a courtyard garden enjoying a north-eastern aspect. The transition between the split levels is handled through a breezeway that can either be securely left open in summer, or closed down with glass in winter. The breezeway creates a hub that allows vertical spatial links between what is otherwise four discreet zones: a ground level recreation area, a children and guest area, a parents zone with office, and a top level living area. The geometries of the house have been set up to frame a northeast view towards Moreton Bay, while diminishing the impact of the neighbouring house on the eastern boundary.
